Bomb Shot

Glossary of Terms

A Bomb Shot is a type of alcoholic cocktail recipe, also known as a Depth Charge. It is made by dropping a shot glass filled with a spirit or liqueur into a tumbler glass partially filled with a chaser drink like an energy drink or beer. This is then consumed quickly (chugged) and the two components mix. Examples of Bomb Shots include the Jagerbomb, Irish Car Bomb, Sake Bomb and Skittle Bomb.

Jagerbomb

The Jagerbomb is currently one of the most popular bomb shots. Originally it was made using beer as the chaser, but in recent years has become more popular with Red Bull and other energy drinks, giving the drinker a caffeine high. Jagerbombs have inspired theatrical preparation methods, including the Jager-train and the Jager-ring.

Ingredients:

  • 45ml [1 ½ oz] Jagermeister
  • ½ can of Red Bull

Preparation:
Fill a shot glass with Jagermeister, then drop the shot glass into a hiball glass filled with the Red Bull.

Skittle Bomb

A Skittle Bomb is so named as it is described to taste like Skittle sweets. It may also be referred to as a Red Bull Bomb or C-Bomb.

Ingredients:

  • 45ml [1 ½ oz] Cointreau
  • ½ can of Red Bull or other energy drink

Preparation:
Fill a shot glass with Cointreau, then drop the shot glass into a hiball glass filled with the Red Bull or other energy drink.

Glitter Bomb

A Glitter Bomb is similar to a Jagerbomb but made with the liqueur Goldschlager instead. It is also called a Glitter Bull.

Ingredients:

  • 45ml [1 ½ oz] Goldschlager
  • ½ can of Red Bull or other energy drink

Preparation:
Fill a shot glass with Goldschlager, then drop the shot glass into a hiball glass filled with the Red Bull or other energy drink.

Dr Pepper Bomb

The Dr Pepper Bomb features amaretto and cola which gives it a similar taste to the soft drink Dr Pepper.

Ingredients:

  • 25ml [1oz] amaretto
  • Dash of cola
  • 100ml [3.5 oz] Stella

Preparation:
Fill a shot glass with amaretto, then drop the shot glass into a half pint glass filled with the Stella and cola.

Flaming Doctor Pepper

Tastes like Dr Pepper, but with a flaming twist.

Ingredients:

  • ¾ amaretto
  • ¼ Barcardi 151 rum
  • ½ glass of beer

Preparation:
Fill a shot glass ¾ full with amaretto, then top the remaining ¼ off with the barcardi rum so there is enough to burn. Place the shot glass in the middle of a hiball glass and fill with beer until its level with the rim of the shot glass (but don't let them mix). Ignite the shot and let it burn for awhile, then blow out the shot and drink.

Black Buca Bomb

This recipe is similar to the Turbo Bomber recipe (which contains Jagermeister instead of Sambucca) and was invented in a London pub in 2009.

Ingredients:

  • 25ml [1oz] black sambucca
  • ½ bottle of Smirnoff Ice (red)

Preparation:
Fill a shot glass with black sambucca, then drop the shot glass into a hiball glass half filled with the Smirnoff Ice.

A-Bomb

  • 25ml [1oz] Bailey's Irish Cream
  • 25ml [1oz] Kahlua coffee liqueur
  • 25ml [1oz] Tia Maria coffee liqueur
  • 25ml [1oz] vodka

Preparation:
Fill a mixing glass with ice, add all the ingredients and stir. Strain into a chilled glass.

Irish Car Bomb

The Irish Car Bomb is a popular drink in the US, but is not commonly served in Ireland as it is deemed offensive. The Irish part of the name refers to the ingredients which include Irish stout, Irish cream and Irish whiskey. The Car Bomb name is used partly because it is a bomb shot and partly as reference to the many car bombings that took place in Ireland.

Ingredients:

  • ¾ pint Guinness stout
  • ½ shot Bailey's Irish cream
  • ½ shot Jameson Irish whiskey

Preparation:
Pour the Bailey's into a shot glass, then fill with the Jameson so you have two layers. Pour the Guinness into a pint glass or beer mug and let it settle. Drop the shot glass into the Guinness and chug. If the drink is not consumed quickly enough it will curdle and increasingly taste worse.

Sake Bomb

A Sake Bomb (or Sake Bomber) is a bomb shot made with beer and sake. Sometimes it is served by placing two chopsticks over a glass, with the shot glass resting between them. The drinker then chants 'sake' and bangs the table until the shot glass falls into the beer.

Ingredients:

  • 25ml [1oz] sake rice wine
  • 568ml [1 pint/20oz] beer

Preparation:
Fill a shot glass with warm sake then drop into a pint of beer. It is best consumed immediately.

Berry Bomb

Tick Tack

This bomb shot is also known as an Orange Tic Tac. Variations include substituting the vodka for Bacardi O rum (orange flavoured rum) and it can be served with or without the orange juice.

  • 170ml [6oz] Red Bull or other energy drink
  • 25ml [1oz] orange juice

Preparation:

Ingredients:

  • 25ml [1oz] Smirnoff Green Apple Twist vodka
  • 1 can Red Bull or other energy drink

Preparation:
Pour the shot of Smirnoff into a hiball glass and add a chilled can of Red Bull or other energy drink.

Melon Bomb

Another recipe called a Melon Bomb includes Midori, dark rum and orange juice, which is shaken and served in a shot glass.

Ingredients:

  • 25ml [1oz] Midori melon liqueur
  • ½ can Red Bull or other energy drink

Preparation:
Pour the shot of Midori in a shot glass, then drop it into a hiball glass about half filled with Red Bull or other energy drink.

Malibull

A variation of this recipe involves adding Malibu, orange juice and Red Bull to a cocktail glass, however this recipe is served as a bomb shot.

Ingredients:

  • 45ml [1½ oz] Malibu coconut rum
  • ½ can Red Bull or other energy drink

Preparation:
Pour the shot of Midori in a shot glass, then drop it into a hiball glass about half filled with Red Bull or other energy drink.

Gold Bomb

This bomb recipe is named gold due to the colour of the drink when the Goldschlager mixes with the Red Bull.

Ingredients:

  • 25ml [1 oz] Goldschlager cinnamon schnapps
  • 120-150ml [4-5oz] Red Bull or other energy drink

Preparation:
Place a shot glass filled with the Goldschlager in the middle of an empty wide glass (like a double old fashioned tumbler), then fill the outer glass with Red Bull or other energy drink until it flows into the shot glass. Allow the ingredients to mix for about 20 seconds, then drink.

Cabo Bomb

The name for this bomb recipe comes from the Tequila brand Cabo Wabo, but any gold tequila can be used.

Ingredients:

  • 25ml [1oz] Cabo Wabo anejo tequila
  • 120ml [4oz] Red Bull or other energy drink

Preparation:
Pour the Cabo Wabo into a shot glass, then drop into a hiball glass of Red Bull or other energy drink and shoot.

This bomb recipe is named after the liqueur Southern Comfort which is used.

  • ½ can of Red Bull or other energy drink
  • 1 splash of grenadine syrup

Pour the Red Bull or other energy drink with the splash of grenadine into a hiball glass. Then pour the cherry vodka into a shot glass and drop into the hiball.

Ingredients:

  • 45ml [1 ½ oz] Jagermeister
  • ½ glass filled with root beer

Preparation:
Pour the Jagermeister into a shot glass, then drop the glass into a hiball glass half filled with root beer.

BuckBomb

Again, this bomb shot uses Jagermeister, but substitutes the Red Bull for Buckfast tonic wine (a fortified wine from Devon, UK), which it takes its name from. A Buckfast contains a large amount of caffine and is often associated with anti-social behaviour and should be approached with the same amount of caution as Red Bull.

Ingredients:

  • 25ml [1oz] Jagermeister
  • ¾ pint Buckfast Tonic Wine

Preparation:
Fill a pint glass three quarters full of Buckfast Tonic Wine, then drop in a shot glass filled with Jagermeister.

Nuclear Sludge Bomb

This drink is named due to the heavy 'sludge-like' Jagermeister liqueur in the middle of the clear Sprite drink.

Ingredients:

  • 25ml [1oz] Jagermeister
  • ½ can Sprite

Preparation:
Pour the Sprite into a hiball tumbler, then drop in a shot glass filled with the Jagermeister.

U-boat

A U-boat bomb is similar to a Jagerbomb, but its method of preparation varies slightly due to the sunken effect of the shot glass. The name comes from the effect of the Jagermeister leaking out like oil.

Ingredients:

  • 45ml [1 ½ oz] Jagermeister
  • 568ml [1 pint/20oz] lager

Preparation:
Place a shot glass on top of an upended hiball glass and fill it with Jagermeister. Then place a pint glass over the two glasses. Turn everything upside down without letting the shot glass leak. Remove the hiball and fill the pint glass to the brim with beer so the shot glass is resting at the bottom. As it is drunk the shot glass will move and gradually leak out Jagermeister into the drink.

Weedkiller

The Weedkiller bomb shot is another variation of a Jagerbomb and originated in Bournemouth, UK.

Ingredients:

  • 45ml [1 ½ oz] Jagermeister
  • 200ml [7oz] Dandelion and Burdock fizzy drink

Preparation:
Pour the Jagermeister in an old fashioned glass over ice and top with the Dandelion and Burdock fizzy drink.

  • ½ can Red Bull or other energy drink

Preparation:
Simply add half a can of Red Bull or other energy drink to a hiball glass, then drop in a shot glass filled with tequila.

Nac Bomb

Another variation on the original Jagerbomb, the Nac Bomb features cognac instead of Jagermeister.

Ingredients:

  • 25ml [1oz] cognac
  • ½ can Red Bull or other energy drink

Preparation:
Simply add half a can of Red Bull or other energy drink to a hiball glass, then drop in a shot glass filled with cognac.

O-Bomb

An O-Bomb shot is named after Bacardi O rum, which has an orange flavour.

Ingredients:

  • 25ml [1oz] Bacardi O rum
  • ½ can Red Bull or other energy drink

Preparation:
Pour the shot of Bacardi O in a shot glass, then drop it into a hiball glass about half filled with Red Bull or other energy drink.

Irish Trash Can

This is not a traditional bomb shot in the sense it doesn't involve a shot glass, but does include a chaser. The name comes from the effect of the Red Bull mixing with the other ingredients and turning it green.

Ingredients:

  • 15ml [½oz] gin
  • 15ml [½oz] light rum
  • 15ml [½oz] vodka
  • 15ml [½oz] peach schnapps
  • 15ml [½oz] Blue Curacao liqueur
  • 15ml [½oz] triple sec

  • ½ can of Monster Energy Drink

Preparation:
Fill a shot glass with Jagermeister, then drop the shot glass into a hiball glass filled with the Monster Energy Drink.

Reverse Jagerbomb

Also known as a Suicide Bomb, the Reverse Jagerbomb does what it says on the tin; simply swap the Jagermeister for Red Bull and vice versa for an extra strong bomb shot.

Ingredients:

  • 45ml [1 ½ oz] Red Bull
  • 125ml [4.4oz] Jagermeister

Preparation:
Pour the Jagermeister into a hiball glass, then pour the Red Bull into a shot glass and drop the shot glass in the hiball.

Bull-Meister

The Bull-Meister is a strong version of the original Jagerbomb, adding vodka into the mix.

Ingredients:

  • 45ml [1 ½ oz] Jagermeister
  • 25ml [1oz] vodka
  • ½ can of Red Bull or other energy drink

Preparation:
Add half a can of Red Bull or other energy drink into a hiball glass with the shot of vodka. Give it a mix then drop in a shot glass filled with Jagermeister.

Jager and Milk

Also known as a Jahlua Bomb, a variation of this is adding a teaspoon of drink chocolate to the milk.

Ingredients:

  • 25ml [1oz] Jagermeister
  • 125ml [4.4oz] milk

Preparation:
Pour the milk into a hiball glass, then drop in a shot glass filled with Jagermeister.
