Corkscrew

Glossary of Terms

A corkscrew is a device which is used for removing corks from wine bottles. A typical corkscrew has a pointed metal helix (also known as a worm) and a handle to help extract the cork. A wine corkscrew works by twisting the worm into the cork then pulling vertically to remove the cork.
Popular corkscrew styles include the basic corkscrew with a wooden or metal handle, the sommelier's corkscrew (also known as the waiter's friend) which also incorporates other gadgets, the winged corkscrew with twin lever arms, the cork extractor with double lever action, the screwpull with a lever and supports and the traditional butler's friend.
