Glossary of Terms

Wine is made from fermented grapes to produce an alcoholic beverage. Wine made with other fruits such as apples and berries is known as fruit wine. Wine is produced by fermenting grapes with yeats, sugar, acids, enzymes and other nutrients. The type of grape variety used effects the colour, taste and aroma of the wine. Wine comes in three main types; red, white and rose, with popular varieties consisting of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Wine is often stored in racks and kept in a cool dark place, with each variety having an optimum serving temperature. Wine is usually drunk from a stemmed tulip shape glass, with a wider bowl for red wine and a narrower bowl for white wines. France, Italy and Spain are the biggest producers of wine.
