Ale

Glossary of Terms

Ale is a type of beer which is brewed from malted barley using a warm fermentation process (between 15°C and 24°C) with a strain of brewer's yeast. Because the yeast ferments quickly, this results in a sweet, full bodied and fruity taste. Many ales contain hops to help preserve the ale and also produces a bitter herbal flavour which balances the sweetness of the malt. Varieties of ale include brown ale, pale ale, Scotch ale and Belgium ale. CAMRA (the Campaign for Real Ale) was established in 1971 to help campaign for the great appreciation of traditionally brewed beer.
