An Irish coffee is a hot beverage made from Irish whiskey, coffee, brown sugar and topped with heavy cream or whipped cream. It originated in the 1940s in Ireland and was picked up by an American reporter who made the drink popular back home. Commonly made and served in a warmed Irish coffee glass, it is made by dissolving the sugar in the whiskey, before adding the ready prepared coffee and topping with the cream.
