Tonic water is a carbonated soft drink with quinine. Indian tonic water was originally produced for medical purposes against malaria and it is now most popularly used as a mixer for spirits such as gin. Tonic water with added lemon or lime is known as bitter lemon or bitter lime. The quinine added to tonic water makes it reactive to ultraviolet light.
