A wine decanter is similar to a wine carafe, and come in a variety of shapes, usually comfortably holding a 75cl bottle of wine. Wine decanters were traditionally used to separate the sediment in wine, but since winemaking techniques have improved modern wine decanters are primarily used to aerate (or breathe) the wine, most commonly with young red wines. A wine funnel may be used to decant the wine into the decanter.
