As a bartender, when I walk into the majority of Coffee shops during the day, I always notice 2 things. (Well 3, if you include all the delicious naughties they typically have on offer 😇)

👉 1) a typical coffee shop is REALLY busy. Rarely is there a full minute where the Coffee machine is not on the go, or the blender is not busy blending concoctions together.

👉 2) The busier coffee shops have massively diversified their offering with all kinds of drinks on the menu

I’ve been saying this now for a good few years, the Coffee Shop has now become the traditional Pub of the 90s/00s. It's now the big community hub - the preferred meet up spot for many. Gone are the days where it would just be parents dropping in after the school run to pick up a latte. Or the quick espresso on the way to work.

A coffee shop, or café, is now multi-faceted;

🧐 It's grab & go.
🧐 It's a quick lunch.
🧐 It's a hot spot for meeting friends.
🧐 It's business meetings.
🧐 It's a coworking space for students and business people alike.
🧐 And in some cases, it's also the host of regular events or clubs.

Monday to Sunday from 8am through to 4pm, our local Coffee Shops are thriving. They are now busier during the day, than Pubs & Bars are during the evenings.

So what makes the better ones truly successful?

Well it goes without saying REALLY GOOD Coffee and a Barista who knows their stuff is a major part of that. Hence the surge in independent Coffee Roasters popping up all over the country. But it is that diversified offering that cater for non traditional Coffee Drinkers and how those drinks are served up. That is the key point to note...

And don't think this doesn't apply to Pubs & Bars, because it does. Many venues now are heavily investing in their daytime drinks because they don't want to lose out. And in some cases, a bar has actually got the advantage as they'll typically have fridges, Ice wells, blenders and of course the coffee machine, making it easy for them to adapt. So the only question to ask...
