When it comes to weird and wonderful days to celebrate, as an Industry, we often look at events like St Patricks Day, Burns Night, Valentines Day, Cinco de Mayo if you’re a Tequila fan - then maybe the likes of Pina Colada day, Porn Star Martini day and Daiquiri Day for something a bit more fun.
If we play our cards right, a great promotion can bring in some decent extra sales for the week.
But not many in the industry will do something for Banana Day, which is April 15th every year.
I’m always intrigued by this, as not only does Drinkstuff carry 6 different Banana Syrups and Purees, we also sell really good amounts of them too!
For me personally, I’m kind of a strange being 😇. While I don’t actually eat too many Bananas (let's be honest, they’re never that ripe), I absolutely LOVE Banana Cocktails. Whether its a Banana Liqueur, or a Banana Puree.
Over the years I’ve made many Banana Cocktails; from Banana Daiquiris, Dirty Bananas or Banana Coladas. The June Bug will also have special memory as one of THE "Disco Cocktails" of the 00s. Then you have cocktails like the Rum Runner which isn't thought of as a Banana Cocktail, but does contain Banana.
But where I have my most fun, is taking Non-Banana Cocktails and adding Banana in.
Case & point;
- a Banana Mai Tai is INCREDIBLE.
- a Banana riff on the Painkiller is exceptional.
- Take a traditional Caipirinha and add in Banana is superb.
- adding a cheeky squirt of Banana Syrup to a Dark & Stormy is next level.
- Banana Syrup in an Old Fashioned with Whiskey OR Rum is delightful.
- Taking a Negroni, swapping the Gin for Whiskey and making a Boulevardier, then adding 5-10ml of Banana Syrup is #ChefsKiss
- and for Tequila fans, Banana with Grapefruit in a Paloma works way too well!
The only thing that limits you, is your imagination.
Of course, the way you make your recipes is up to you, but if you want help, just look for the Sugar and do a simple swap. eg; the Mai Tai normally includes Demerara, just swap it for Banana. Same for an Old Fashioned. Swap the Sugar for Banana Syrup in a Caipirinha. Or the Agave for Banana in a Paloma.
