Plastic Ban October 2023

Are you ready for the next Plastic Ban?

From the 1st of October the next phase of the plastic ban will come into effect, with a ban on single-use plastic plates, bowls, trays, containers & cutlery. This ban is already in effect is Northern Ireland & Scotland and brings England into line. The ban covers both online and over-the-counter sales and includes all types of single-use plastic, including biodegradable, compostable & recycled plastics. This does also include items that are made wholly or partly made from plastic, so anything that has a plastic coating or lining is included.

What does this ban cover?

The following single-use items are part of the new plastic ban:

  • Plastic Plates
  • Plastic Bowls
  • Plastic Trays
  • Plastic Cutlery
  • Polystyrene food & drink containers including polystyrene cups
It's worth noting this is for single-use plastics where the term single-use means the items is meant to be useed only once for it's original purpose

Are there any exemptions?

There are some exemptions in place for plates, bowls and trays. If you're supplying them to another business, or if these items are packaging that is pre-filled or filled at the point of sale, then you can still use single-use plastic.

There is no exception for single-use plastic cutlery, and if you use disposable cutlery for takeaway etc then you will need to swap to an alternative like birch wood.
