How to make an Old Fashioned Cocktail + some simple Variation Ideas

Hey Cocktail fans, welcome back to the blog. Today we're looking at the Old Fashioned Cocktail. Now I'm going to be open from the start. This is Steve the Barman writing this, and if you're reading this and you know me, you'll know I love my Rum. Don't get me wrong, I actually don't mind a proper Old Fashioned Cocktail. But I'm not a huge Neat Whiskey Fan. So I actually don't own any Whisk(e)y, other than a nearly finished bottle of Jack Daniels!

So it won't surprise you to realise this Old Fashioned Cocktail Blog is actually more about RUM and Rum Fashioneds. Or Rum Old Fashioneds. Whatever the correct vernacular is!

The (Rum) Old Fashioned is a VERY easy Cocktail to make. You literally need four things. And I pretty much guarantee that if you're reading this, you like to make Cocktails at home, so therefore you'll already have these ingredients in some form.

  • Glass
  • Ice
  • Spirit
  • Sweetener
  • Bitters

Here at Drinkstuff, we can help with 3 of those things.

We sell Whiskey Glasses, obviously.

We have multiple 100s of different Syrups in every flavour you can imagine.

And we sell cool Ice Cube Moulds, even the Big Ice Cube ones.

Plus, we can also help you with your Garnish. A crowd favourite here would be the Frona Dried Oranges, for example.

And Maraschino Cherries

To make a traditional Old Fashioned

You can make it straight in the Glass.

But I prefer a Mixing Glass.

You can put your glass in a Freezer to chill down.

  • 60ml Whiskey
  • 5-15ml Sugar
  • 2 Dashes Angostura Bitters

Simply add a few ice Cubes and Stir to chill and dilute. The longer you stir, the more dilution you get. Some of you will love 10 seconds of stirring. Others will prefer 30+ Seconds. There's no right or wrong, just your preference.

Now, I want to move on to what I'm here for.

Cocktail Inspiration...

I would like to point out that all these Rum Fashioneds contain Ron Colon Rum. This is in no way a Paid promotion for Drinkstuff. Drinkstuff is not endorsing these rums or the brand. This is merely me bringing in some cool stuff from my Studio at home to show you and inspire you to make something different! Let's face it, the world doesn't need another Pumpkin, Maple, or Cherry Old Fashioned recipe. They've been done to death.

So let's crack on!

PS; in true StB form. I have no names for these Old Fashioned Variations. So feel free to jump in the comments of the video and help me out!
